Popular Hymn Choices for Funerals

To this day, hymns remain as some of the most popular and enduring song choices for funerals. Regardless of whether the funeral service is religious or not, some people take comfort in the familiarity and spirituality of hymns. Plus, because they vary so much in tone – from sombre and contemplative to joyful and uplifting – they are an effective way of reflecting on grief and remembering your loved one for the wonderful person that they were. In this blog, we’ll take you through some of the most popular hymn choices for funerals in the UK to help you plan a loving, personalised service. We’ve included a short excerpt of each hymn, but you can also find the full lyrics linked below.

Based on a 19th century Swedish poem and set to the tune of a Swedish folk song, How Great Thou Art is one of the most popular hymn choices for funerals. Although the song celebrates God, it also rejoices in the beauty of nature and the world.

“O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder

Consider all the *worlds thy hands have made,

I see the stars, I hear the *rolling thunder,

Thy power throughout the universe displayed”

Probably the most popular hymn in the English language, Amazing Grace is a lovely choice for a funeral because of its message of salvation and finding peace after death. It is frequently played or accompanied by bagpipes.

“Amazing grace! How sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found;

Was blind, but now I see.”

All Things Bright and Beautiful is an Anglican hymn that is sung by many different churches within Chrisianity. Much like How Great Thou Art, it is a hymn that chooses to celebrate life rather than mourn it, which has made it a favourable choice for funerals throughout the years.

“All things bright and beautiful,

All creatures great and small,

All things wise and wonderful:

The Lord God made them all.”

Powerful Victorian hymn Abide With Me is about turning to God for help during dark times in life. Even if they don’t consider themselves religious, some people take comfort in spirituality or use it to look for answers during times of grief. For this reason, it is a reassuring hymn for those needing guidance during their period of mourning.

“Abide with me!

Fast falls the eventide;

The darkness thickens.

Lord with me abide.

When other helpers fail,

And comforts flee,

Help of the helpless,

O abide with me!”
